Stripped back and minimalist, Ponguru is a breathtakingly conversation between ancient and contemporary voices.

Phil and Al began performing together in 1998 while studying jazz performance at university. Al became immersed in the practice of ngā taonga pūoro in 1999, and is now regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the instruments. Phil spent more than a decade working as a jazz bassist and composer in Canada before returning to New Zealand to team up with Al.

With Ponguru, these two fine musicians bring together the low voice of the double bass and the many voices of taonga pūoro in an exploration of timbre, space, melody, and our shared musical language.
