Jim Langabeer was a highly respected New Zealand jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer, and teacher, known for blending North American jazz forms with Aotearoa contexts. He was a pivotal figure in the local scene, founding the band Superbrew and releasing the award-winning album Africa/Aroha in 1987. He was a master saxophonist and flautist who studied at the Creative Music Studio in New York with legends like Jaco Pastorius and Dave Liebman, and touring with artists as diverse as Sammy Davis Jr., The Bee Gees, The Temptations, and numerous free jazz ensembles.
Back in New Zealand, Jim mentored generations of musicians through private lessons and jazz education initiatives. His final album, Secret Islands (2017), was released on Rattle Records and featured collaborations with Rosie Langabeer, Roger Manins, and Neil Watson. The album highlighted his innovative use of Taonga Pūoro and distinctively soulful improvisational style, cementing his legacy as a key architect of modern New Zealand jazz.
