NOTE: THIS A LOOSE TRANSLATION (EDITED AND PARAPHRASED) FROM THE ORIGINAL GREEK REVIEW
Greek Record of the Month, November 2020
It is not often that we single out a jazz album, Greek or foreign, in our column. It is not that our taste in music doesn't allow for it, nor that extremely interesting things do not happen within the jazz scene inside and outsiide of our borders, it just happens that way. This time, however, Tania Giannouli's collaboration with Kyriakos Tapakis and Andreas Polyzogopoulos made the cut. The new works of Stavros Dalkos and Tendts were also very good, but "In Fading Light" is our pick for November 2020.
A jazz piano trio with oud and trumpet is certainly uncommon, and the combination of sound colors is one of the reasons that Tania Giannouli chose this line up. She has been very active in recent years composing for films or collaborating on other records such as "Transcendence" (as Tania Giannouli Ensemble, 2015) or the very good "Rewa" with New Zealand Maori composer Rob Thorne (2018). All four of her albums have been released by Rattle Records, an interesting company with an emphasis on jazz, classical and world music based in Auckland (New Zealand).
Her companions in this trio are not mere accompanying musicians. Three skilled musicians, combining with beautiful content full of melodies and emotions, content that will appeal to those who willing to slow down and enjoy this unique blend of sounds (such as "No Corner"), or something more energetic (such as "When Then"). This is music that speaks explicitly to, as Giannouli puts it, "what is happening in the world at this time. People need music. They need art. It is not a luxury".
