Tania Giannouli's fifth album for the Rattle label, SOLO, presents twenty-four deeply personal piano improvisations rich in vulnerability and searching honesty. Her music is characterised both by playing on the keyboard and on the strings inside the instrument. A pearly sound alternating with muted tones creates excitement and wonder. She mentions in an accompanying text that "being alone with the piano gives her a strong freedom". Her special attitude can give the impression that she "sneaks" around the piano. Curious about the different sounds she can produce depending on the angle at which she attacks the strings and keyboard. It is clear that her intuitive music comes from a loner. Engaging music on a really good album.
