Tomo

Peter Hobbs

The compositions on this album were performed on keyboards, modular synths, drums, trumpet, pūtōrino, ocarina and cello. They are also fused with ambient field recordings from the tracks composed in the caves of the Waitakere Ranges. The music was developed and produced for the dance work TOMO, a collaboration with my dear friend and choreographer Gabriel Thomas, and produced by Atamira Dance Company.

TOMO transcends into a dream space of endless time, woven together by the tupuna (ancestors) before them, as two wairua (spirits) cross between realms. Their mother holds the power of creation and carries within her the gateway to the world of light. She is a daughter, a sister and a mother in tapu (sacred). Her sacred belly is the house in which these wairua come into being. One departs to the world of the living; the other enters the embracing arms of the long night.

PETER HOBBS

Peter Hobbs (BMus) is a musician and composer who earns a living scoring soundtracks for films, television, commercials, art installations, and contemporary dance. He also fronts the band Lost Demos. Peter is internationally recognised for his work as a film composer and sound designer, and he currently operates out of his Auckland-based studio, Harmonic Studio. He describes himself as a "diehard advocate for the spaces between the notes". He regularly works with the leading Māori dance company Atamira Dance Company, from which the music on his 2023 Rattle release TOMO is derived. The album is a continuation of ideas and approaches evident in his Rattle debut, LUMINESCENCE, which was also released in 2023.
