This album is Michael Houstoun's personal selection of Douglas Lilburn’s compositions for solo piano.

In 2010, Michael Houstoun was approached by playwright Dave Armstrong to see if he might like to be involved in a theatrical presentation built around the letters written to Douglas Lilburn by painter Rita Angus. In preparation, Michael made a thorough study of Lilburn's piano repertoire. In the process he developed a strong affinity with a number of the works, resulting in performances of unique insight and empathy. While this album does not comprise a soundtrack of the play, a considerable amount of music from the show has been included, along with some of Michael’s personal favourites. Beautifully performed, expertly produced and recorded, LILBURN is a highly satisfying celebration of New Zealand’s finest composer by New Zealand’s finest pianist.
