While the harmonic, rhythmic, and improvisational framework for the compositions belongs to the Jazz idiom, Alexis is committed to writing music that reflects, as he puts it, “our stories as New Zealanders’. Whatever we call this music,” he says, “the aim remains the same: to create something that is uniquely ours.”
