Delayed Reaction

Phil Broadhurst Quartet

2012 JAZZ ALBUM OF THE YEAR finalist

Phil Broadhurst’s Delayed Reaction was inspired by the life and work of the great French pianist, Michel Petrucciani.

Phil is one of New Zealand’s finest and most revered jazz pianists and composers. For the last number of years (since the release of his previous album, The Road Home), Phil has studied Petrucciani’s music, and Delayed Reaction features five Broadhurst compositions inspired by the French master, and five pieces penned by Petrucciani which Phil and his superb quartet have reinterpreted.

Phil Broadhurst’s Delayed Reaction is the deepest, most sincere, most meaningful form of tribute that one musician can pay another. Petrucciani’s life-affirming spirit is unmistakably present here, but so too is Phil’s personal understanding of Petrucciani’s music and the new directions derived from it, which is surely the way Petrucciani would have wanted it.
